The following op-ed on the need for Albany to reduce the deficit and produce a budget appears in the viewpoints section of the pressconnects.com Web site - “Faced with a stalemate over one of New York’s worst budget crises in history, state lawmakers came up with a strategy on Wednesday. They went home.
In doing so, they proved again that dysfunction in the state Legislature is an ailment that won’t be cured easily, even in an election year when incumbents seeking re-election should want to put their best foot forward.
Instead, they have chosen to let the 2010-11 budget, which was supposed to have been approved by April 1, languish until at least next week. The decision by lawmakers, after three unproductive days, reflects none of the sense of desperation the state is in as taxpayers await a spending plan that must close a projected $9.2 billion budget gap this year.”
