Benefits unclear in state’s new law on power

James Heaney of the Buffalo News writes - A new state law being hailed as a major boost to the local economy may or may not be all that it’s cranked up to be.

In all likelihood, its impact will be far less that what politicians have contended since Gov. David A. Paterson last week signed a law redirecting profits from the sale of unused hydropower from the New York Power Authority to a new program to fund economic development in Erie and Niagara counties.

While they don’t specify how much money the law would generate, lawmakers say that it’s a lot and that it should provide a shot in the arm to the local economy.”
