Cuomo steps in to help on workers’ comp

Aug 08, 2012
by Rob Lillpopp

The following is part of an editorial the Poughkeepsie Journal posted on its website, it also ran in the Buffalo News.

“Gov. Andrew Cuomo deserves praise for an accomplishment many would have thought near-impossible in New York state’s current business climate.

The Cuomo administration has rejected a request by the insurance industry to raise workers’ compensation premiums by up to 11.5 percent. Instead, he is pushing through the first decrease in rates since 2008.

Cuomo has been urged by this newspaper and business leaders to take specific actions to corral the culture that has saddled New York with one of the nation’s worst business climates…

…A 2007 reform announced by then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer and legislative leaders was supposed to bring workers’ compensation costs under control. While that reform increased benefits to injured workers, a necessary step, it was supposed to be matched by steps to control ever-increasing costs. That didn’t happen. This latest move by the Cuomo administration should bring some relief.”
