1300 Elmwood’s new name: ‘SUNY Buffalo State’

Dan Miner, reporter for Buffalo Business First, reports on the first steps to improve the image of Buffalo State College… which has been newly named SUNY Buffalo State. Here’s his report.

Don’t call it a college.

SUNY Buffalo State continues to polish its appearance to the outside world, including a new name approved by Nancy Zimpher, State University of New York chancellor.

The old: Buffalo State College. The new: SUNY Buffalo State.

It also announced its first-ever crest, featuring the iconic Rockwell Hall clock tower, to serve as the official logo. The crest includes the words “Dedicated to Excellence,” which are drawn from a phrase in Buffalo State’s mission statement. The previous logo was just the college’s name.

It’s all part of the “Because of Buffalo State” marketing campaign, which began in 2011 at the behest of President Aaron Podolefsky.

“Elements of the new crest aptly capture Buffalo State’s academic excellence and build on our historic significance in higher education,” Podolefsky said. “Its look visually evokes a message of educational vibrancy that remains a central tenet of our institutional mission and vision.”

The process for developing the crest began last spring, according to a news release. An initial draft was shared with the College Senate last spring, with feedback received in the fall from the campus community.
