HealthNow New York Inc., doing business as BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York and BlueShield of Northeastern New York, has maintained its “Excellent” accreditation by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). HealthNow recently completed the NCQA health plan re-accreditation survey for its lines of business including commercial-HMO/POS/PPO combined, Medicare HMO, Medicare PPO, and Medicaid HMO to achieve this designation. The accreditation is effective through April 2016.
A rank of “Excellent” is based on a combined score of three measures contributing to a culture of continuous improvement: clinical quality, measures of consumer satisfaction, and review of standards relating to health plan processes. An overall score of 90% or greater must be achieved in order to maintain “Excellent” accreditation.
NCQA is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. NCQA accredits and certifies a wide range of health care organizations. BlueShield of Northeastern New York honored 110 high school seniors in the Capital Region as 2013 recipients of the 2nd Annual BlueShield Scholars Award, a program that rewards area high school seniors pursuing higher education in the field of health or human sciences. The is an annual program in which local high schools nominated deserving seniors that represent BlueShield’s core values of respect, personal responsibility, excellence, teamwork, passion, and integrity.
“The greatest investment we can make is in our children,” said Brian O’Grady, vice president, BlueShield of Northeastern New York. “BlueShield works hard to keep them healthy, and our schools strive to guide them to healthy futures. We are developing young leaders and encouraging their passion for health care through our vision that healthy changes everything.”
Each of the 110 winners receives a $250 scholarship towards his or her continuing education, a certificate of recognition, and a profile published in the Business Review’s 2013 Schools Report, June 28, 2013. Designation Recognizes High Performing Hospitals for Quality and Efficiency
BlueShield of Northeastern New York today announced that three area hospitals- Ellis, Saratoga, and St. Peter’s- have been named Blue Distinction Centers. Ellis Medicine and Saratoga Hospital were both recognized for quality in Knee and Hip Replacement and Saratoga Hospital was additionally recognized for quality in Spine Surgery. St. Peter’s Hospital was named a Blue Distinction Center+ with recognition for excellence in Knee and Hip Replacement. These hospitals are the only local facilities to receive designations for these services.

Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Kenmore Mercy Hospital, and Sisters of Charity Hospital, Main Street Campus, were all recognized for excellence in Spine Surgery and Knee and Hip Replacement. Sisters of Charity Hospital, St. Joseph Campus was recognized for quality in Knee and Hip Replacement. These hospitals are the only local facilities to receive designations for these services.
The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program recognizes hospitals across the country that have a proven track record for delivering better results – including fewer complications and readmissions – than hospitals without these recognitions. Blue Distinction Centers+ meet the same quality criteria as Blue Distinction Centers, but are further recognized for their expertise and efficiency in delivering high quality care that is more affordable for patients.
